The translation and stylistic analysis of the Jonathan Franzen's short story Agreeable

In this bachelor theasis I am dealing with the problems that may occur during translation, in this particular case from English to Czech. As a foundation material I used short story Agreeable written by Jonathan Franzen. The thesis is divided into practical part and theoretical part. The first, practical part consists of the translation of the whole short story Agreeable. The second, theoretical part consists of my analysis of the translation, which is focused on the problems I had to solve during the translation process. I comment on the choices I made, usually justifying by translation theories of Jiří Levý and Dagmar Knittlová. Translation and analysis of Jonathan Franzen's Freedom

This bachelor thesis is focused on the problems which may occur, while translating from English into Czech, using as a foundational material a novel Freedom by American author Jonathan Franzen. The thesis is divided into two sections. For the purpose of the first, practical part, I have chosen two different extracts of the novel, one is taken from the middle of the book, the second one is the last part of the novel Freedom. The second section consists of my analysis, special attention is paid to the problems I had to solve during my translation. I comment on the choices I have made, usually also quoting from the books that deal with translation theories, I found especially helpful those written by Jiří Levý, Dagmar Knittlová and Zlata Kufnerová.

Diminutive Suffixation in Spanish

in English: Diminutive Suffixation in Spanish The present paper addresses the topic of diminutive suffixation in Spanish and different ways of its translation to Czech. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part is concerned with the typology of Spanish and Czech diminutive suffixes, their meaning and usage in the present day Spanish and Czech. The second part is dedicated to a corpus analysis based on the examples excerpted from the parallel language corpus InterCorp. The research focuses on the suffix -ito/a as it is the most commonly used diminutive suffix in the Hispanic world. The analysis is done on three parts of speech: nous, adjectives and adverbs. Subsequent translation analysis deals with the most frequent diminutives of these parts of speech and concludes that Czech tends to express certain values of Spanish diminutives through other means. Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone by James Baldwin: translation and stylistic analysis of three representative fragments

This bachelor thesis is focused on the problems which may occur, while translating from English into Czech, using the novel Tell Me How Long the Train's Been Gone by the American author James Baldwin. The practical part contains chosen extracts from The House Nigger. The theoretical part aims at the analysis of my translation. Special attention is paid to the problematic sections, which have been encountered while translating. Final decisions are provided with my comments often with regard to the helpful quotes from the books dealing with translation theories, especially by Jiří Levý and Dagmara Knittlová. Use of diminutives in the internet discussions regarding the gender of the speaker

This bachelor thesis compares the use of diminutives among men and women in the computer-mediated communication. It contains a theorethical summary of basic grammatical rules regarding the formation of diminutives, the semantic aspects of their use in an informal language (with emphasis on expressivity) and an overview of the socioliguistic theories within the framework of gender differences. The research section is based on a sociolinguistic study of this particular subject. The aim is to find the most significant differences of the word choices and the frequency of use of diminutives of men and women and possibly a reason for it. Diminutive Formation of Oikonyms in Bohemian

The aim of the article is to originate the list of every documented diminutive oikonyms in Bohemian derived from inhabitant and possessive toponyms, describe word-forming types, chronological development and the way of their origin. The paper enables the comparison with the analysis of Rudolf Šrámek, who explored the diminutive oikonyms in the area of Moravian and Silesian. The paper shows, that the diminutive oikonyms in Bohemian are different in every explored aspects. The reasons for this state could be the larger expanse of the observed area and bigger colonization activity.

The Mommy jargon on Internet Forums

The theme of the diploma thesis is the analysis of the "mother language" on the Czech Internet forums (especially on emimino.cz, baby-cafe.cz, mimibazar.cz). In the theoretical part the author introduces the varieties of the national language. She defines the characteristics, structure and social differentiation of the analysed sociolect. Then she presents the fundamental aspects of human communication and also devotes to the particularities of communication on the Internet. In the practical part she carries out a language analysis of the collected material. She focuses primarily on the lexical means, mainly diminutives, compounds and abbreviations. The aim of the thesis is to present the specific type of expressing and at the same time to contribute to the research of the non-standard Czech language with this study.
